I am beginning with my husband's help to plan our winter trip, the destination that will relieve us of the cruelties of winter, my least favorite season. Last night, I began thinking about last winter's expedition. How wonderful it was, we deviated from our beloved Mexico, to a new location, Belize.
My best friend recently made me aware of the fact that I am not high maintenance, just particular. That statement is probably true and that is why I had this large amount of anxiousness at going to this new destination. We had been trying small towns in Mexico that last few years and I was never disappointed. The strange thing I love new things, it is just when I find something I love I can't get enough of it.
We flew into San Pedro, it was not what I expected. The largest reason they spoke English. My husband speaks Spanish, and loves to use his second language. I had become accustom to hearing Spanish and that created a tone that we were indeed in a new country. It is always exciting to me to think of the new things we will learn about the culture and of course the new food.
There was a hustle and bustle in the city, we quickly found a cab driver who took us to the ferry that traveled from San Pedro to Ameregis Caye. The cab driver immediately asked, what we thought of Barrack Obama, who had just been sworn in as the President of the United States. I could not hold back my enthusiasm to answer this question as my wonderful, yet Republican husband rolled his eyes.
We were taken to a small port, purchased our ferry tickets, found a bar to have our first vacation cocktail then waited for the ferry. I asked if I could take my drink and was assured this was not a problem. It was vacation. What he did not mention was the size of this ferry. It was a boat, a small boat filled with college students, locals, and a lady with two small turtles in a plastic bowl. I brought the drink but did not drink it but wore it instead so did the others around me.My hair ripped across my face that was splashed with salt water and rum as we took the 45 minute ferry ride with very loud students half in the bag.
Then halfway through the ferry ride, I stopped concentrating on my sticky drink and looked around, this was a moment. I looked out of the boat and saw those amazing turquoise colors that turn to a deep navy and found myself internally sighing with relief. Shortly after, Kyle said, "Did you see the water?". The two of us and our luggage, was dropped of at a pier in front of Fido's, World Famous Bar. We were told someone from the Matachica would be coming to pick us up that you could not get a cab to our hotel. We decided to have a real vacation cocktail after all it was world famous.
In a short amount of time, a fairly polite young man, who we later would find out was from Guatemala, took our suitcases, and off we went in a meticulously clean and comfortable white sport boat. He did ask what we would like to drink, that a complimentary beverage would be awaiting us. I had that warm tinkling feeling like I had found a treasure, so I ordered Rum the drink of the pirates. We were met by a friendly woman and our complimentary cocktail.
The place was paradise, I quickly turned to Kyle, probably beaming with childish joy, "An artist owns this place, I can feel it." When in actuality, I could see it, the art was chosen by a person who understood art. It was whimsical and chic. The lobby had this bohemian Moroccan vibe, with abstract art hanging throughout and amazing music playing. The thatch roof lobby housed the incredible Mambo restaurant and a partially open aired bar, it was truly paradise.
We were given the key to our own thatched roof building properly named "lime", where inside we found an artfully decorated room, with a comfy bed and sitting area, incredible reading materials, and a large, modern bathroom with a closet that was almost as fabulous as my own. YEAH! I love vacation.Okay, now you can see why once again taking this journey, I feel pressure.
